Adventure Elopements  ·  Zanzibar

Elope in Zanzibar.
Without the guesswork.

The legal process for foreign nationals in Zanzibar takes 3 days: the simplest in Africa. We handle everything on the ground, so your only job is to show up.
WHY ZANZIBAR

The easiest place in Africa to get legally married as a foreigner.

Most countries require foreign nationals to give 21 days' notice before a marriage can be registered. Zanzibar offers a Special License that bypasses this entirely — and it processes in 3 working days.

There is no equivalent online application system for foreigners. No e-portal. No self-service pathway. Every step runs through in-person government liaison, in Swahili, during office hours that follow the local calendar. That is where most couples hit a wall — and where we come in.

We have planned elopements here long enough to know which offices handle which documents, which days move faster, and what needs to be in order before you leave your home country.

WHAT COUPLES RUN INTO

The problems we solve before they become yours.

  • Unlike Kenya's eCitizen portal, Zanzibar has no digital pathway for foreign nationals to apply for a marriage license. Everything requires in-person attendance at the relevant government offices ; in Swahili.

    HOW WE HANDLE IT

We manage all government liaison on your behalf. You do not need to navigate offices, counters, or paperwork in a language you don't speak. We know who to see and what to bring.

  • Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim archipelago. Government offices do not observe standard Friday hours. Many close early, take extended midday breaks, or have reduced capacity around Friday prayer time : which most couples don't find out until they're already there.

    HOW WE HANDLE IT

We build the local calendar into every elopement timeline. We never schedule government visits on Friday afternoons, and we know which offices keep which hours throughout the week.

  • What you need, in what format, and whether it requires apostille certification is not listed on any government website in a form that's useful to a foreign national. Most couples arrive with incomplete or incorrectly certified documents.

    HOW WE HANDLE IT

We send you the full requirements list before you leave home — format, apostille, translation, and all so nothing is missing when you arrive. The checklist below is your starting point.

  • Standard marriage registration for foreigners in Tanzania requires 21 days' advance notice. Most couples researching Zanzibar elopements only discover this after they've already set dates and booked flights.

    HOW WE HANDLE IT

We apply for the Special License — a legal mechanism that brings processing time down to 3 working days. This is the route we use for every elopement we plan in Zanzibar.

THE LEGAL PROCESS

How foreign nationals legally marry in Zanzibar in 3 days.

Zanzibar operates under its own civil registry system, separate from mainland Tanzania. The Special License provision allows the standard 21-day notice period to be waived for foreign nationals who meet the documentation requirements. Processing takes 3 working days from the date of application.

Both parties must be present on the island to make the application in person. There is no remote or proxy option. This is why document preparation before arrival is non-negotiable — if anything is missing, it delays the process from the point of application.

02

ARRIVAL & APPLICATION

Both parties attend the civil registry in person. We handle all liaison and translation. Application for the Special License is submitted on your first available working day.

03

The Special License processes in 3 working days. We track this and confirm with the office. Timelines account for local office schedules and public holidays.

OUR EDGE

Our edge is perspective.

We are not limited to one island, one venue list, or one style of doing things. WNM has spent 15 years planning destination weddings and intimate celebrations across East Africa and beyond. That means we know how to compare destinations honestly, spot weak supplier links early, challenge generic ideas, and design an elopement that feels personal rather than "this is what everyone does in Zanzibar."
For a two-person wedding, that matters.
There are no guests to create atmosphere. No bridal party to distract from delays. No big reception to carry the day. The experience has to be quietly flawless from beginning to end — the right beach, the right light, the right privacy, the right ceremony rhythm, the right photography flow, the right legal handling, and the right kind of calm around you.
WNM's role is to protect that. Other planners may know the island too but WNM knows how to translate the island into a refined, legally sound, emotionally intentional elopement experience for international couples who want privacy, beauty, clarity, and no unnecessary chaos.
We are not here to give you a standard beach wedding for two. We are here to create a calm, intimate, beautifully executed Zanzibar elopement that feels like it could only have belonged to you.
